PRESS RELEASE...

Ken Payne lived a unique life as fascinating as any story ever told.  His stories and art captivated young and old for more than four decades.  The Payne family, Vic Payne Studio, Inc., Dustin Payne Studio and Mountain Trails Galleries sadly announce his passing.

Born into the ranching heritage of the Southwest, Ken began his artistic career as a painter focusing on the landscapes, cowboys and native peoples of the Southwest.  His library was stocked with well-worn volumes stained with paint and clay from his scrutinizing the lives of these amazing characters of the West.  This extensive research enabled him to accurately retell their stories in oil and bronze.

While always pursuing his passion for art, Ken's first love was flying.  As a young man, he cleaned hangars and refueled planes in exchange for flying lessons.  He was soon crop dusting and fighting forest fires which finessed his skill as a pilot leading him to fly for a commercial airline company that later became Continental Airlines.

In the late 1970's Ken focused his talents toward bronze sculpture and for more than 40 years produced close to 150 sculptures depicting the action, danger and even the humor of many a frontier situation.  Both private and corporate collectors have sought his sculptures nationally and internationally.  Ken pioneered the idea of sculpting in public when he founded Mountain Trails Galleries (www.mountaintrails.com) in Sedona, AZ.  He was also featured in a nationally televised program entitled "Sculpting with Ken Payne."

He will be remembered as one of the most influential Western sculptors of the twenty-first century and his legacy will live on through the artistic talents of his sons, Vic and Phillip Payne, and grandson Dustin Payne.
